Understanding anaesthesia & obesity care.

A plain-language reference on anaesthesia, ASA risk, general anaesthesia drugs, anaesthesia side effects, morbid obesity treatment and bariatric surgery in Delhi — written for patients preparing for surgery.

Anaesthesia, explained

Anaesthesia is the use of carefully selected medications to keep patients comfortable and pain-free during surgery. Depending on the procedure, it may involve putting a patient fully asleep, numbing a specific part of the body, or providing sedation. The anaesthesiologist is the specialist doctor responsible for your safety before, during and after surgery — assessing your health, planning the anaesthetic, monitoring vital functions and supporting your recovery.

General anaesthesia and how it works

General anaesthesia allows patients to undergo surgery safely while remaining completely unconscious and free from pain. Carefully selected medications induce sleep, control pain and support normal body functions. Every anaesthetic is individually tailored — age, weight, medical conditions, current medications and the nature of the surgery are all considered when designing the anaesthetic plan.

Pre-surgical assessment and risk planning

Every patient undergoes a thorough pre-operative assessment to identify factors that may influence anaesthesia or recovery, and to develop an individualised care plan. Patients with obesity often require additional consideration because of associated conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension and heart or lung disease — careful planning helps reduce risks and support a smoother recovery.

Anaesthesia safety and recovery

Modern anaesthesia is very safe and most patients recover without significant problems. Temporary side effects such as nausea, sore throat, drowsiness, dizziness or shivering usually settle within a short time. Careful pre-operative assessment, individualised planning and close monitoring throughout surgery minimise risks — with special attention given to patients with obesity, sleep apnea and other medical conditions.

Obesity, BMI and bariatric surgery

Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the tools used to assess weight-related health risks. For some patients with obesity, bariatric surgery can offer significant and lasting improvements in weight, health and quality of life when other treatments have not succeeded. Because patients with obesity often have unique medical and airway considerations, careful anaesthetic planning is an important part of the surgical journey.

Multimodal pain management & enhanced recovery

A multimodal approach to pain management — combined with enhanced recovery strategies — improves comfort, reduces opioid-related side effects and helps patients return to normal activities sooner. Dr. Sinha's practice places particular emphasis on patient safety, opioid-sparing pain management and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).

Enquiries

Frequently asked questions.

What is an anaesthesiologist and what does Dr. Aparna Sinha do?+

An anaesthesiologist is a specialist doctor responsible for your safety and comfort before, during and after surgery — administering anaesthesia and monitoring vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and pain control throughout the procedure. Dr. Aparna Sinha is Principal Director, Department of Anesthesia, Max Healthcare, with over three decades of experience in bariatric, metabolic, minimally invasive, pediatric and other complex surgical procedures.

How is my fitness for surgery assessed?+

Before surgery, every patient undergoes a detailed medical evaluation — including a review of medical conditions, medications, previous surgeries, airway assessment and any heart, lung or sleep-related concerns. This helps the anaesthesia team understand your overall health, assess potential risks and develop a personalised anaesthetic plan, which is particularly important for patients with obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension or other medical conditions.

What are the side effects of general anaesthesia?+

Most patients recover from general anaesthesia without significant problems. Common temporary side effects may include nausea, sore throat, drowsiness, dizziness, shivering or mild confusion — usually short-lived and improving within hours or a few days. Additional precautions may be needed for patients with obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, children and those undergoing complex surgical procedures. Modern anaesthesia is highly safe, and continuous monitoring throughout surgery helps ensure the highest standards of care.

Why is anaesthesia for patients with obesity and bariatric surgery different?+

Patients with obesity often have unique medical and airway considerations. Conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart or lung disease may influence both anaesthesia and recovery. Bariatric surgery therefore requires a carefully tailored approach to airway management, pain control, monitoring and postoperative care. Enhanced recovery strategies and individualised anaesthetic plans help improve safety, reduce complications and support a smoother recovery.

Dr. Aparna Sinha specialises in anaesthesia for patients with obesity, bariatric, laparoscopy, robotic and pediatric surgical procedures. Her particular interests include perioperative care of patients with obesity, difficult airway management, obstructive sleep apnea, opioid-sparing and opioid-free anaesthesia, perioperative pain management and enhanced recovery after surgery.
